Karate for Adults
Training for adults builds on the basic foundation of the Childrens class. The underlying philosophy can be summed up in three words Health, Skill, Application - a concept taught to Sensei Ken by his current teacher Steve Rowe. Essentially practice of a martial art revolves around promoting good mental, spiritual and physical health. This is achieved by putting in effort and to learn the required skills. Application of those skills is the final piece of the puzzle, albeit the one we all hope we never have to use!
The classes are not “grading focussed”. We purposefully avoid a focus on getting new coloured belts preferring to allow the training to speak for itself rather than putting our efforts into attaining another symbol of progress. Gradings are carried out but this is done when the student has demonstrated over a period of time that they have acquired the skills needed to move to the next level. The time this takes is not governed by a set period, nor is it driven by a set number of classes taken. It is driven by the cumulative achievements of the student during regular training.
Teaching is principle based rather than technique led, which may cause a few frowns but the first lesson is to understand that all technique is based upon the same set of principles.
The following items all form part of the core syllabus.
Kihon Waza - the basic kicks, punches and receiving techniques of karate. In addition, use of the knees, elbows and shoulders as striking tools are also practiced.
Renraku Waza - using the above in combination
Kihon Kumite - formalised pairs work which teach the distance and angles of attack, entry points and so much more.
Kata - These are mnemonic forms which reinforce all the learning at varying levels depending on the students’ experience.
Ukemi - or breakfalls. These are taught to all students from the beginning, to remove the fear that many people have of encountering the ground! We just make it your friend.
Pad work - It’s essential to get feedback from hitting something.
Locks, Chokes and Take-downs - the basic elements of these are taught from the start.
The approach to teaching is progressive and student centric, everyone progresses at a pace suited to themselves, with the occasional push from Sensei to help things along!
